Tullis Russell, Bollington, Cheshire
E&B worked closely with KROENERT to facilitate the purchase of a new Coating Line that was installed at Tullis Russell Security and Speciality Coating, in Bollington, Cheshire. The installation of the upgrade to their coating capabilities was managed by KROENERT, assisted by Engelmann & Buckham. The state-of-the-art coating line has been tailor-made for Tullis Russell’s impressive 18,500 m2 manufacturing plant to fulfil their current and future requirements.
“This equipment has significantly enhanced our ability to offer new solutions for advanced coatings servicing the market for functional layers.” Matt Littler, Business Development at Tullis Russell.
Hamburg based KROENERT, class-leading coating machine manufacturers, were asked by
Tullis Russell for a bespoke solution that would replicate the output of their existing equipment, whilst providing flexibility for entry to new markets. The result is a line that is designed to handle up to 2.1m wide substrates ranging from thin gauge films to high gsm paperboard and to apply thin
and viscous aqueous coatings.
Two coating stations and two drying tunnels allow Tullis Russell to coat both sides of a substrate (or two layers on the same side) in one pass, giving maximum flexibility at web speeds many times the speed of the existing coaters. The trolley-mounted coating head design allows for five different coating technologies including variations of curtain coating.
Two years on, Tullis Russell’s Operations Director, David Roberts, comments on the contribution that the KROENERT line has made to the business as it serves the High-Performance Coating sector.
“The line enables us to achieve a major increase in productivity on our existing products. We now have several options available as we choose the coating technology to suit the application and highly efficient drying and cooling allows sustained elevated speeds.
Tullis Russell enjoys fault-free production, high overall operating efficiency and the new coating technology has replaced old methods without loss of product character and quality. The line’s versatility handles new applications as they emerge so there is considerable growth into new sectors. A very positive impact on Tullis Russell coating capabilities.”
Dave Roberts also considers the relationship between the three companies to be strong:
“Both KROENERT and Engelmann & Buckham are on hand with excellent support for both routine and development needs”.

“I spoke with one of your engineers on Thursday of last week. As previously the advice and technical information was invaluable. All the more impressive was that they were busy at a show and I still received a call promptly.
The help I was given has enabled me to ( I hope I’ve not just jinxed it) resolve the issues we were having.
We deal with several other major service providers for our print and finishing equipment, however, the efficiency and professionalism of your company far exceeds any of them.
This is not the first time I have received crucial assistance from the engineering team.”

“We knew that to compete better in our market place we needed more automation and speed from our polywrapping line and looked to Sitma as the world leaders for polywrapping machinery. Integra (E&B), sole UK agents for Sitma, was the obvious choice to supply us with refurbished Sitma equipment. You know that you are getting the genuine article due to their Sitma engineering knowledge and the parts they source direct from Sitma. The decision to choose a refurbished machine over new made the move into automated polywrapping an extremely cost effective option for our business.”
“Our machine has enabled us to move weekly hand-bagging jobs onto the machine as it has side seal, double header and multiple feeders for inserting products. We are also achieving our initial objectives of providing alternatives in our own market. Overall, Integra (E&B) gave excellent service; they installed the machine and gave us full operator training and warranty”
